Game Notes »

(July 24, 2019 – York, Pa.):  The York Revolution walloped the Sugar Land Skeeters 10-2 on Wednesday afternoon in front of 3,451 fans at PeoplesBank Park, earning a doubleheader split after dropping the opening game 5-0.  The first place Revs salvage the series finale, improving to 9-4 in the second half and will host the New Britain Bees in the first of a three-game series on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Dan Minor toed the rubber for York in game one. The Texas Tech product got off to a hot start as he worked a 1-2-3 first inning while striking out Zach Borenstein to end the frame.

Newly acquired right-hander Chase De Jong twirled his first of six tremendous scoreless innings in the bottom of the frame for the Skeeters.

Sugar Land took the game’s first lead in the top of the second on a two-run home run to right from Albert Cordero opening the scoring at 2-0. The Skeeters tacked on two more in the top of the third as Borenstein recorded an RBI groundout to score Rico Noel, and with Jason Martinson on second, Cordero lined an RBI single to right to extend the lead to 4-0.

Minor rebounded from the pair of tough innings by tossing a scoreless fourth.

Telvin Nash led off the bottom of the frame with a double off the center field fence, but De Jong struck out the next three batters in order to end the threat.

The Skeeters added one more run in the top of the fifth. Borenstein led off the inning with a double to left and scored on a two-out single to deep right-center off the bat of Juan Silverio, driving the lead to 5-0.

De Jong worked around a leadoff double to right by James Skelton in the bottom of the sixth to retire the next three Revs in order and complete his stellar Atlantic League debut.

With the 5-0 lead, Matt West was called upon to close it out. York loaded the bases with one out, but the Sugar Land right-hander induced a game-ending double play to give York its first series loss in the last 12 tries.

The Revs trailed early in the second game, but quickly took control.

York starter Duke von Schamann ran into some trouble in the top of the first inning as Noel led off the game by reaching second base on a throwing error after a bunt. After Martinson moved Noel to third on a ground out, Borenstein recorded a sacrifice fly to give Sugar Land a 1-0 lead.

Rogelio Bernal took the ball for the Skeeters in the series finale. Trapp greeted the Sugar Land right-hander by singling up the middle on the first pitch. Henry Castillo followed with a single to right that moved Trapp to third. After Bernal retired Nash, Isaias Tejeda lined an RBI single off the glove of a diving Giansanti in center to tie the game at 1-1.

York took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the second. For the second consecutive inning, the Revs put runners on first and third with no outs thanks to singles from Welington Dotel and Angelys Nina. Alvaro Rondon followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Dotel and give the Revs a 2-1 lead.

The Revs offense exploded in grand fashion in their half of the frame. Bernal walked Castillo, Nash, and Tejeda in order to load the bases with no outs. Carlos Franco followed by smashing a grand slam off of the tents in right field to break the score open at 6-1.

The Revs followed with three more runs in the fourth. Trapp led off the inning with a single. After Bernal got Castillo to fly out, Nash drove a double off the wall in right field to give York runners on second and third with one out. Tejeda continued his torrid July with a single up the middle to score both runners and move the lead to 8-1. Nina added an additional run on a sacrifice fly to thrust the lead to 9-1.

The Skeeters scored a run in the top of the fifth on an infield single by Javier Betancourt to cut the lead to 9-2.

The Revs added an additional run in the bottom of the fifth on a lead off solo home run to right from Zach Sullivan to push the lead to 10-2.

von Schamann (5-3) finished his day with a scoreless sixth inning, making it five straight outings of going at least six innings. He allowed just two unearned runs while scattering eight hits, walking none, and striking out four.

Julio Perez slammed the door in the seventh giving the Revs the win in the series finale.

Recap by Brett Pietrzak

Notes: The Revs’ record 11-series winning streak is snapped with the loss in the opener; it was York’s first series loss since June 7-9 at Somerset. The shutout loss in the opener was the Revs’ first since June 7. It ended a franchise record streak of 15 consecutive games with a home run for the offense.  The Revs suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since June 23-24 (had won 17 of previous 20 games).  Tejeda had a season-best 13-game hitting streak snapped in the opener, the Revs’ third-longest of the season.  Skelton’s double in the opener extended his on-base streak to 19 consecutive games.  York’s 10 runs in the second game marked the third time in the last six games and 11th time in the last 39 games that the Revs have scored in double figures.  Nash hit safely in both games and now has a season-best 10-game hitting streak.  Franco’s grand slam is the Revs’ first of the season and first since June 18, 2018 (Tyler Clark).  von Schamann is now tied for the team lead with five wins along with fellow starters Minor and Mitch Atkins after earning fourth win in his last five starts.  He has gone at least 6.0 innings in five straight and seven of his last eight starts.  He walked none for the fifth time in 11 starts.
