Long Island Ducks (2) at York Revolution (3)

Game Notes »
(June 2, 2019 – York, Pa.):  Melky Mesa cranked a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth and the bullpen used a lockdown effort as the York Revolution defeated the Long Island Ducks 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at PeoplesBank Park.  The Revs avoid a sweep with the win and snap a seven-game skid before heading out on a seven-game road trip that begins Monday night at High Point.

The Revs not only received a door-slamming effort from the bullpen, but a strong starting effort as well.

Making his second career Atlantic League start, York right hander Duke von Schamann was sharp early, striking out three batters over the first two innings which were both scoreless.

The Revs scored the game’s opening run for the first time this series in their half of the first inning. Alexi Casilla and Melky Mesa both slapped one-out singles off of Ducks starter Jake Fisher to set the table. Both runners advance one base and moved into scoring position on a passed ball allowed by Hector Sanchez. Telvin Nash recorded his 25th RBI of the year by smoking a sac fly to deep center field, scoring Casilla and giving York a 1-0 lead.

The Ducks offense ended a temporary hiatus in the top of the third inning. Vladimir Frias led off the frame by tripling off of the wall in right field. Matt den Dekker followed by hitting a double to deep center field, plating Frias and tying things at 1-1. After a Steve Lombardozzi sacrifice bunt moved den Dekker to third, L.J. Mazzilli lofted a sacrifice fly to deep right to push the run across and give the Ducks a 2-1 lead.

von Schamann bounced back to work a scoreless fourth and fifth inning. “The Duke” retired each of the final six batters he faced and totaled five innings pitched with two runs allowed on five hits while striking out five in the no-decision.

Orleny Quiroz worked a scoreless top of the sixth inning, skirting around a leadoff double by Mazzilli to keep it a one-run game.  Quiroz (2-0) struck out David Washington looking, and after the Revs failed to record an out on a fielder’s choice, bounced back to strike out Mike Olt and retire Daniel Fields on a ground out.

York retook the lead in the bottom of the frame. Casilla legged out an infield single, his second hit of the game, to give the Revs a one-out base runner. The next batter was Mesa, who blasted a two run home run over the Arch Nemesis in left, suddenly making the score 3-2 in favor of York.

Jameson McGrane received the call from the bullpen in the seventh inning.  McGrane allowed just a one-out bloop single to Frias before striking out den Dekker for the second out.  An error kept the inning alive and Mazzilli worked a walk to load the bases.  Lefty Jarrett Martin was brought in next and answered the call, striking out Washington to end the frame with the lead still intact.

The pitching duty in the eighth inning belonged to fireballer Peter Tago who worked a masterful inning, retiring the side in order while striking out two.

With the Revs leading 3-2 heading into the ninth, Pat Young toed the rubber looking for his second save of the season. Young worked a 1-2-3 inning with a pair of ground outs including a nine-pitch battle from Rando Moreno to begin the inning, and a swinging strike out of den Dekker to record the save and end the Revs’ seven-game skid.

“We were all fastball, slider today,” said Young after nailing down the final out.  “We really tried to establish that fastball early.  We had to go to the slider a bunch on Moreno.  I played with him with the Giants and he’s a scrappy hitter that does not want to strike out and he gave me a great battle.  Luckily we have guys behind us that make those routine plays like Casilla.”

Recap by Brett Pietrzak

Notes: The seven-game losing streak tied the longest in franchise history for the seventh time and first since the 2017 championship season (June 14-20, 2017).  Mesa now has 17 RBI in his last 17 games.  Five Revs relievers combined to toss four shutout innings on just two hits and one walk while striking out seven.  The save is the sixth of Young’s career, eighth including winter ball.  Quiroz has now worked six consecutive scoreless outings to begin his Revs career.
