REVS PINCHED IN FINALE

Frank Gailey gave the York Revolution a nice bounce-back performance, the offense tallied 16 hits, but five double play balls proved to be the difference as the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs came away with a 5-4 win, taking the series in front of 5,045 at PeoplesBank Park on Thursday night.

The Blue Crabs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Jose Lozada launched the second pitch of the game over the Arch Nemesis in left, the first leadoff home run in a York game this season.

The Revs answered quickly with Alonzo Harris countering on a solo shot in the bottom half of the frame, taking Drew Hayes deep to left center to tie the score at 1-1. The Revs would load the bases later in the inning, but were unable to do any further damage against Hayes, who threw 44 pitches to record his first three outs.

The home run ball hurt the Revs again in the fourth inning as Cory Vaughn walked with one out and Devon Rodriguez followed, hooking one around the foul pole in right to give Southern Maryland the 3-1 lead. The home run extended Rodriguez’ hitting streak to nine in a row.

The Revs rallied in the fifth as Harris clubbed his second home run of the game, a solo home run to left center again. Harris becomes the first Rev this season to homer twice in a game, and has now hit four home runs in his last eight games. Isaias Tejeda followed with a double, and Michael Burgess made it three straight hits with an RBI single to center to tie the score at 3-3. Vaughn delivered a strike to Luis Alen at the plate on the play on which Derek Moccia said Alen missed the tag. Alen argued and was immediately ejected along with skipper John Harris.

The Blue Crabs would take the lead in the eighth on a solo home run by Zach Wilson, as he went deep to left center field off of reliever Ricardo Gomez. It was the Blue Crabs’ tenth home run of the series, and only the third that did not come with men on base.

Southern Maryland added an insurance run as Zach Cone was hit by a Chris Dula offering to start the ninth, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches, and then came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Brian Bistagne to extend the lead to 5-3.

The Revs did not go easy though as Ryan Dent and Travis Witherpoon singled back-to-back to begin the ninth. Harris then came through again with an RBI single to right on a full count, his third run driven in of the game, to cut the deficit to one. However with one away, Burgess bounced into a game-ending double play, the fifth turned by Southern Maryland of the night, as they held on to win 5-4.

The Revs will welcome the Barnstormers Friday night for the first of a three-game series, with York’s Steve Janas (1-3, 4.82) and Lancaster’s Rommie Lewis (3-5, 6.13) squaring off on the hill. It’s 90s Night featuring a new post-game Friday Firework show, as well as Art in the Park Night featuring the Revs’ Wine and Paint event located on the Home Run Patio. To sign up for the event or for tickets to the contest, visit yorkrevolution.com, call 717-801-HITS, or visit the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.

Darrell Henry and Matt Present will be on the call at 6:10 p.m. on 1350 WOYK as well as online at woyk1350.com and on the WOYK App.

Notes: The crowd of 5,045 was the third-highest of the season for the Revs.  The Revs tallied 16 hits one night after posting 19 knocks.  The five double plays hit into by the Revs tie a franchise record for a single game, and establish a new single-game record for most ground ball double plays.
