(April 27, 2018) -- The York Revolution exploded for nine runs in the first three innings, cruising to a 9-4 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers on Friday night in front of 4,481 fans at PeoplesBank Park.
York was out-hit for the second straight night and only managed one base runner after the third inning, but piled on early, marking the first time since 2014 that the Revs have won their first two games of the season.
In the top of the first inning, Revs starter Ross Detwiler retired the first two batters he faced but walked the next two. Blake Gailen followed suit with an RBI single up the middle to put the Barnstormers up 1-0.
The Revs answered quickly in the bottom of the inning. Jared Mitchell and Alexi Casilla both singled to set up first-and-second for Jose Cuevas who singled to center, scoring Mitchell to tie the game. Two batters later, Zach Wilson launched a three-run home run over the left field Arch Nemesis to make it 4-1. Luis Cruz capped off the big inning with an RBI single to right field on a softly hit grounder down the first base line to make it 5-1. The Revs batted through the lineup and had six hits in the inning.
In the second, Detwiler struck out the side and stranded the bases loaded after allowing all three runners to reach with two outs. York added a run in its half of the inning when Mitchell scored on a wild pitch. Barnstormers’ starter Jonathan Albaladejo was tagged for six runs over just an inning and two-thirds.
The Revs stayed hot at the plate in the third after Albaladejo’s exit, scoring three more runs. Travis Witherspoon plated a run with an RBI double down the right field line and Casilla added an RBI single in the frame.
Detwiler finished his night with a scoreless inning in the top of the third and gave up one run on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Down eight runs after three, Lancaster got two back off reliever Nick Baker in the fourth, cutting the Revs’ lead to 9-3.
The Revs bats went quiet after that, as they scored all nine of their runs over the first three innings. Four Barnstormers relievers combined to retire 15 straight Revs hitters from the final out of the third inning until Witherspoon singled to center with two outs in the eighth. Garrett Granitz threw two perfect innings, Matt Marksberry added two scoreless innings and Matt Reynolds tossed a scoreless inning as well.
Despite not scoring after the third, the Revs held onto their comfortable lead. Jake Ezell logged two shutout innings, allowing only one hit. Luke Westphal followed Ezell with another scoreless inning despite allowing a leadoff double. The Barnstormers plated one more run when Keenyn Walker hit an RBI single off Zac Grotz in the top of the eighth to make it 9-4, but Lancaster managed no further damage as Junior Rincon pitched an easy one-two-three ninth inning to finish off the win.
Ezell (1-0) ended up with the win for the Revs while Albaladejo (0-1) took the loss.
The Barnstormers pounded out 13 hits, drew four walks and had four starters with multi-hit games, but only pushed across four runs and left 12 men on base in the loss. The Revs had 10 total hits from seven different players and left only four men on base.
The Revs continue their four-game series with the Barnstormers on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. Right-hander Mitch Atkins gets the start for the Revs while the Barnstormers will counter with left-hander Nate Reed. The night features a T-shirt giveaway by Heritage Lawn and Landscape Care and will be capped off by Postgame Fireworks presented by Auction Houses of Dover & Mt. Royal. Tickets are on sale at, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the York Revolution Ticket Office.
