(May 1, 2019 – York, Pa.): The York Revolution were two outs away from notching a second consecutive come-from-behind victory, but it was a New Britain rally in the top of the ninth that gave the Bees a comeback victory of their own, 5-4 on Wednesday night at PeoplesBank Park in York. The Revs fall to 1-4 with the loss and will look to win the series from the Bees in the rubber match on Thursday at 11 a.m.
For the fifth consecutive game, the Revolution surrendered the first run of the game when Bees right fielder Bijan Rademacher tripled to the gap in left center field and was awarded home plate on a throwing error giving the Bees the 1-0 lead.
The game stayed at 1-0 through the third and fourth innings as York starter Ross Detwiler and New Britain right-hander Rainy Lara were locked in and setting down opposing batters quickly.
The offense regained form in the fifth inning for both teams. The Bees used three singles including an RBI knock from Alexi Amarista to give New Britain a 2-0 advantage.
The Revs answered in the bottom of the fifth inning as Corey Bass led off the inning by reaching first base on an error. Alexi Casilla followed with a single to left and both runners advanced on a throwing error from Jonathan Galvez. After reliever Kyle Simon retired Henry Castillo on a hard hit ball to first, Melky Mesa poked an RBI infield single toward third to give the Revs their first run. Telvin Nash stepped to the plate next and drove an RBI single to left field to tie the game at 2-2.
Detwiler tossed his most impressive inning of the game in the sixth, retiring the side in order on just six pitches to finish his night. His final line in the no-decision was six innings pitched, eight hits, two runs allowed, no walks, and two strikeouts.
Jonathan de Marte was the first Revs pitcher called from the bullpen to face the bottom of the Bees lineup in the seventh. de Marte rebounded flawlessly from a tough first appearance as he retired the side in order to keep the score even.
After the Revs were held scoreless in their half of the seventh, Jeffrey Rosa was brought in to work his second straight game. Like de Marte, Rosa pitched a perfect half inning, keeping the game deadlocked at 2-2.
The Bees turned to Jose Rosario for their half of the eighth inning. Nash led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Rosario worked his way back from the leadoff walk by retiring Isaias Tejeda and Nate Coronado for the first two outs.
Welington Dotel stepped up next and drilled a clutch two-out single up the middle plating Nash from second to give the Revolution their first lead of the ballgame. The Revs tacked on an insurance run when Bees second baseman Ozzie Martinez misplayed a pop up, allowing Dotel to score to make the lead 4-2.
With a two-run lead, the Revs went with right-hander Julio Perez to close the game. Perez ran into immediate trouble allowing a leadoff single to Jason Rogers. Rademacher worked a walk to give the Bees runners on first and second with no outs. Perez set down Jovan Rosa with a high fastball to register the inning’s first out. Control was lost again to Deibinson Romero as Perez issued his second walk. Jonathan Galvez slapped a two-run double down the left field line to tie the game at 4-4 and put New Britain runners on second and third with one out.
Fabian Roman was tabbed to try to keep the game tied as he replaced Perez. After a walk to Bees pinch-hitter Jared James, Amarista drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Bees closer Giovanni Soto worked a 1-2-3 inning to earn the save and give the Bees the late-inning win.
Notes: The Revs are now 1-2 in games in which the lead changes hands. Detwiler has allowed just two earned runs and has walked none in 11.0 innings over his two starts, but has taken no-decisions in a pair of Revs losses; he has thrown 72% of his pitches for strikes through two starts. Jeffrey Rosa needed just four pitches to work a 1-2-3 eighth and has a team-best three-appearance scoreless streak to begin the year. Revs pitchers had combined to retire 10 consecutive batters, nine of which came on ground outs, until New Britain’s ninth inning rally. York right-hander Matthew Grimes (0-1, 1.50) faces New Britain righty Zach Stewart (0-0, 12.00) in Thursday’s Baseball in Education Day contest.
