(July 8, 2021 – Charleston, WV): The York Revolution rallied from down five to draw even but an eighth inning run lifted the West Virginia Power to a 6-5 victory in the rubber match of a three-game series on Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Revs drop the final two after winning the opener, and return home to host the Long Island Ducks in a big division series this weekend.
The story of the game early on was the defense as each of the first five half innings of the game saw a ground ball double play turned in the infield.
Ironically, West Virginia plated the game’s first run with help of a defensive miscue in the bottom of the third as Connor Myers, who advanced on an errant pickoff throw, scored an unearned run on a Scott Kelly sac fly to right.
The Power rallied with two outs in the fourth, plating four runs to go up 5-0. Revs starter Johan Lopez was one out away from escaping unscathed, but a walk to Justin Henle extended the inning, preceding his eighth walk of the night which was issued to Rubi Silva, forcing in a run. Reliever Bruce Bell entered and induced a pair of ground balls, but the Revs committed errors on both as three more runs came across in the damaging sequence.
Bell was outstanding in giving the Revs an opportunity to come back, logging 3.1 scoreless innings of one-hit ball out of the bullpen.
York struggled with West Virginia starter Manny Corpas who allowed just one hit despite five walks through the first five innings, but the Revs hit Corpas for four runs on six hits in the sixth, climbing within a run.
Yan Sanchez started the outburst with a leadoff double to left and advanced to third on Carlos Castro’s one-out single to left field. Jack Kenley followed with an RBI single through the right side to get the Revs on the board. With two outs, James Harris extended his hitting streak to 10 games by pounding a two-run double off the fence in right-center. Andrew Dundon capped the rally with an RBI single up the middle, bringing the Revs within 5-4.
York tied the game in the eighth as Welington Dotel ripped a pinch-hit single to left-center, stole second, and advanced to third and scored on a pair of wild pitches.
West Virginia answered right back, however, setting the table on a pair of leadoff walks from Revs righty Andry Cuevas (0-1). Edwin Espinal’s deep fly out to left-center advanced both runners, and with a drawn-in infield, Elmer Reyes smacked an RBI single into left providing the final margin.
Arcenio Leon closed it out with a ground ball double play in the ninth, the fourth turned by the Power on the night.
York will host Long Island on Friday at 6:30 p.m. with Duke von Schamann (2-3, 6.58) facing Darin Downs (0-1, 4.50).
