(May 21, 2024 – Waldorf, Md.): The York Revolution dropped their series opener to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, 6-2 on Tuesday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium. The Blue Crabs used a six-run first inning to build a big early lead and never looked back.
Anthony Brocato’s three-run homer to left spotted the hosts a 3-0 lead, three batters into the home half of the opening frame. Aaron Hill later added an RBI double to left center, and Ian Yetsko lined a two-run single to left to make it 6-0. It matched the biggest inning against the Revs this season and was their biggest first inning allowed since a six-run first on April 29, 2022 at Lancaster.
York got on the board in the top of the second. Trey Martin and Colton Welker led off with singles, and with two outs, Paul Mondesi slapped an RBI single into right to make it 6-1.
Revs starter Ethan Lindow (1-2) was lifted after the tough first inning, and the Revs bullpen was outstanding holding Southern Maryland scoreless the rest of the way. Four York pitchers combined to hold the Crabs to two singles over seven shutout innings.
Michael Horrell worked the first three out of the ‘pen and has now chucked seven scoreless innings in his last five appearances. Tom Sutera struck out three in two scoreless innings, while Moises Lugo (two strike outs) and Matt Turner both logged scoreless innings.
David Washington led off the sixth with a double to the gap in right center, extending his Revs career-opening hitting streak to 16 consecutive games. Welker’s sac fly to left brought him home to make it 6-2, but York managed just one further hit, a Matt McDermott double with two outs in the seventh, the rest of the way.
Crabs starter Shawn Semple (1-2) scattered eight hits over seven innings for the win, striking out eight with no walks. Cody Thompson retired all six out of the Southern Maryland bullpen to close it out.
Notes: McDermott went 3-for-4 for his second consecutive three-hit game; he has multiple hits in six of his last seven games, going 15-for-30 on that stretch, and also owns a current eight-game hitting streak while having reached safely in all 19 games played with York. Kobe Kato saw his 21-game on-base streak snapped. Welker has hit safely in six straight and seven of eight total games with York. Martin now has 19 hits in his last 57 at-bats (.333) dating to May 3. Regency Furniture Stadium has proven to be one of the toughest road venues for the Revs who have now dropped 20 of their last 23 at Southern Maryland dating to 2021. York falls to 13-10 overall, remaining just two games back of first place, and 9-4 on the road.
Up Next: York lefty Aaron Fletcher (2-1, 1.56) faces Southern Maryland right-hander Garrett Martin (2-1, 4.86) on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and FloBaseball.TV beginning at 6:45 p.m.
