(May 26, 2018) — The York Revolution put one in the win column for the third straight night with a 6-3 victory over the Road Warriors behind Ross Detwiler’s 11-strikeout gem Saturday night at PeoplesBank Park.
Detwiler and Road Warriors starter Kelvin Villa combined to throw just 12 pitches in a six-minute first inning and each pitched scoreless ball through the first two frames.
In the third, the Revs offense broke the scoreless tie. After Travis Witherspoon doubled off the Arch Nemesis in left field with two outs, Alexi Casilla followed with a double of his own to bring Witherspoon home, making it 1-0 Revs.
Detwiler cruised through three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth. After allowing a game-tying RBI single to Geraldo Valentin, former Rev Chris Rivera picked on a high 0-2 fastball and launched a two-run home run to left to give the Road Warriors a 3-1 lead.
The Revs came right back though and hung a five-spot on Villa and the Road Warriors in the fifth. Ryan Dent hit his fourth homer of the season, a solo shot to left-center with one out, to cut the deficit in half. With two outs, Casilla reached on an error by Road Warriors third baseman Gustavo Pierre on a ground ball that would have ended the inning.
The Revs quickly took advantage of the error in a big way. Welington Dotel was the next batter and doubled off the wall in left to bring home the tying and go-ahead runs as the Revs took a 4-3 lead. Zach Wilson, who missed the Revs’ previous three games, followed with a two-run blast to left-center to push the lead to a more comfortable 6-3 mark. It was Wilson’s fourth long-ball on the year.
The Revs strung together five hits, including four for extra-bases, in the inning. Four of the five runs were unearned and all came against Villa.
That was all the run support Detwiler needed, as he made his way through the Road Warriors lineup the rest of the night. He exited the game after a season-high 7.1 innings of work, scattering six hits with no walks. The story of the night was Detwiler’s personal-best 11 strikeouts, the most by a Revs starter this season. It was the fifth game in Revs history with a starter logging 11 or more strikeouts and no walks, and the second by a lefty as Detwiler joined Chris Cody as southpaws to accomplish the feat for York.
Joe Van Meter recorded the last two outs of the eighth, striking out the only two batters he faced to get a hold, and Grant Sides picked up the save with a scoreless ninth. It was Sides’ first save since getting the final three outs of the 2017 Atlantic League Championship Series clincher for the Revs.
Detwiler (3-1) earned his second win in as many starts while Villa (0-3) was handed the loss for the Road Warriors.
The Revs racked up double-digit hits (11) for the fourth straight night and eight of their nine starters had at least one hit, including Melky Mesa with three and Dotel with two. Dotel extended his hitting streak to nine games and has now driven in at least one run in three straight games.
On the pitching side, Detwiler, Van Meter and Sides combined for 15 strikeouts, a team season-best, including six in a row from the last out of the seventh through the second out of the ninth. All nine Road Warriors starters struck out at least once.
The three game series wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m. at PeoplesBank Park with Revs righty Mitch Atkins (0-3, 8.01) facing Road Warriors lefty Giovanni Soto (1-1, 4.12). Notes: Detwiler joins teammate Jay Gause (July 1, 2017 vs. Sugar Land), Chris Cody (2013 vs. Long Island), and Ryan Baerlocher (twice in 2007 vs. the Road Warriors) as the only starters in Revs history to post 11 or more strikeouts in a game with no walks. It marked the ninth time in Revs history that a starter has tallied at least 11 strikeouts and first since Gause last season. Detwiler joins Cody who had a pair of 11-plus strikeout games in his Revs career (both in 2013) as the only lefties to do it. It was Detwiler's longest outing since August 10, 2016 when he fired eight shutout innings in his Oakland Athletics debut, a win against the Baltimore Orioles at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The Revs have won two of their last three series, and are in the midst of their second three-game winning streak of the season (won four straight, May 6-11). York pulls within four game of first place. The Revs have scored six runs or more in all three games on the current streak (22 total). York pitchers faced the minimum over the final 5.2 innings.
