Tracy named 49th manager in Red Sox history after orchestrating historic turnaround

Former York Revolution star first baseman Chad Tracy will guide his Boston Red Sox into the postseason after being named the 49^th manager in Red Sox franchise history last week.

Tracy became the first former Atlantic League player to manage a big league club when he took over the Red Sox as interim manager on April 26. At that time, Boston was tied for the American League’s second worst record at 10-17 (.370). The 41-year-old led the Red Sox to a 77-58 (.570) record the rest of the way, clinching a postseason spot last Sunday.

Last Tuesday, Tracy was rewarded with a three-year contract that runs through the 2029 season with a club option for 2030.

Tracy oversaw the best 30-game span in Red Sox history as his club went 27-3 from July 3-August 7, including a franchise record-tying 15-game winning streak (July 3-22) which matched only the 1946 Red Sox. Their 21-4 record in July marked the best winning percentage (.840) in a single month in Red Sox history and the third best July record in MLB history. It was all part of a 55-29 run that changed the course of the Red Sox’ season as they became the first team in Major League history to even finish with a winning record after losing as many as 46 of their first 78 contests, let alone reach the postseason.

Since his playing days concluded, Tracy spent eight seasons as a minor league manager where he was one victory shy of 500 career wins, notching his 499^th victory one day before taking over the Red Sox. The son of 11-year MLB manager Jim Tracy, he began managing in the Los Angeles Angels organization with Class A Burlington in 2015 and spent two seasons with High-A Inland Empire before spending four years as the Angels’ minor league field coordinator. He had served as Triple-A Worcester’s skipper since 2022, leading the WooSox to a winning record in each of his four full seasons.

With York, Tracy batted .277 with 32 home runs and 134 RBI including his final season as a player in 2014 when he slugged 23 homers and drove in a league-leading 97 runs as the starting first baseman for a Revs playoff squad.

The Red Sox begin their postseason Tuesday night at 8 p.m. in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series on the road against the New York Yankees.

In other alumni news, 2025 York Revolution left-hander Brendan Cellucci capped off his first Major League season with a perfect 0.00 ERA, firing 8.2 scoreless innings over six appearances down the stretch for the Toronto Blue Jays. The former ALPB champion allowed just two hits and walked three while striking out 11 out of the Jays bullpen. Cellucci became the 16^th former Revs player to reach the big leagues and third in 2026 joining teammate Rudy Martin Jr with Toronto and LHP Nick Raquet with the Baltimore Orioles. Cellucci, 28, became the eighth to make his Major League debut after playing in York.
