Jared Mitchell opened the scoring for the York Revolution in the top of the second with a double to deep center, and then came through with a mammoth two-run home run in the seventh to break a tie en route to a 5-4 victory for the Revs in the rubber game of their series with the Lancaster Barnstormers on Sunday afternoon in front of 4,329 fans at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The Revs finish their second half-opening road trip with a 4-3 record, heading into the Atlantic League All-Star break on a winning note.
Chase Simpson set the table for Mitchell in the second by working a walk off of Lancaster starter Jarret Leverett. Simpson came all the way around to score from first as Mitchell drilled a double to deep center as the Revs struck first in all three games in the series.
The Barnstormers would come back with an unearned run in the second. Trayvon Robinson bounced one towards the middle and shortstop Ryan Dent showed off his range getting to the ball, but after wheeling around, his throw sailed high and Robinson moved up to second base on the ball out of play. Lastings Milledge followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt, and Anderson De La Rosa came through with a sac fly to right field to tie the game at 1-1.
The Barnstormers again scored in the third off of Revs starter Logan Williamson. Drew Doty doubled off the wall in right to lead off the frame, and after a single by Caleb Gindl, came in to score on a sac fly off the bat of Sean Halton to give Lancaster a 2-1 lead.
That was all of the damage that Williamson would surrender. He proceeded to work six strong innings, allowing just two runs, one earned, and struck out four. He tossed his third consecutive quality start, and records back-to-back victories for the first time this season. Williamson was able to snuff out potential Barnstormer rallies, inducing a double play in the fourth and picking the leadoff runner in the sixth.
The Revs would tie the game in the fourth with a run. The inning started with a Michael Burgess double and walks to Travis Witherspoon and Simpson. With Mitchell at the plate, Leverett would fire a wild pitch to bring home Burgess, tying the game at 2-2. However the Lancaster lefty struck out the following two hitters to escape the jam.
Leverett stayed on for the seventh as Simpson greeted him with a single up the middle, and then Mitchell followed with a two run home run to right field, his fourth of the year, clearing the tents above the wall to give York the 4-2 lead. The Barnstormers then summoned reliever John Kuchno who got a comebacker to the mound from Ryan Dent, his first batter faced, but threw low to first allowing Dent to reach second base on the play. Then with two outs in the inning, Isaias Tejeda came through with a sharp ground ball just inside the first base bag, scoring Dent and giving the Revs a 5-2 lead.
The Barnstormers tried to claw their way back, scoring an unearned run in the seventh off of Joe Van Meter, but Chase Huchingson finished off the frame by fanning Garrett Weber. Ricardo Gomez worked a 1-2-3 eighth including a strikeout of De La Rosa.
Brad Allen then came on for the ninth and gave up a broken bat single to Vladimir Frias, who then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Allen struck out pinch-hitter Josh Bell but with one away, Rico Noel lined a single to left, scoring Frias on the play, bringing the winning run to the plate in Gindl. The Barnstormer center fielder had reached base each of his first four times to the plate, but Allen got him to bounce into a game ending 4-6-3 double play, earning his 11th save of the season.
The Revs will return from the All-Star break on Friday when the Bridgeport Bluefish pay a visit to PeoplesBank Park. Alexi Casilla extended his hitting streak to 12 consecutive games with a bunt single in the fifth. He has now hit safely in 16 of his 20 games played this season. The Revs improve to 8-5 against the Barnstormers on the season, and the 8 victories is more than they have against any other Atlantic League opponent. Logan Williamson recorded his 18th career victory for the Revs, fourth most all-time, and has now given up just 3 earned runs in his last 21.2 innings pitched.
