(August 13, 2023 – Lexington, KY): Nellie Rodriguez became the first in York Revolution history to blast 20 home runs in three different seasons and J.T. Hintzen worked the Revs’ first complete game in two years, but the Revs suffered an 8-2 loss to the Lexington Counter Clocks on Sunday afternoon at Counter Clocks Field, absorbing their first three-game series sweep of the season.
Lexington built an early lead as Zach Watson led off the bottom of the first with a homer to right center, and JC Encarnacion led off the home second with a long ball to right, giving the Clocks a 2-0 lead.
Hintzen retired 10 straight after the second home run, cruising into the middle innings.
York was held without a hit through the opening four frames by Clocks starter Daniel Corcino, but after a leadoff walk to Jacob Rhinesmith in the top of the fifth, Rodriguez obliterated a game-tying two-run homer to left, his fourth in the past five games, squaring things at 2-2.
Hintzen kept it tied, working out of a two-on jam in the bottom of the fifth with a line drive double play, but Lexington took control of the game with a five-run sixth.
Trouble brewed as Watson led off the sixth with a first pitch double to left center and issues compounded when the Revs were unable to record an out on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Osmy Gregorio. Connor Owings lined an RBI single to right for a 3-2 Lexington edge, and Thomas Dillard tucked a three-run homer onto the front of the right field porch for his league-leading 32nd of the year, ballooning the hosts’ lead to 6-2. Things continued to go south as Encarnacion reached on an error and later scored on a two-out single to left by Zach Davis.
Hintzen (7-6) saved the Revs’ bullpen, remaining in the game and rebounding to work a scoreless seventh. Lexington managed one more in the eighth on an RBI single by Mitch Ghelfi.
Drew Mendoza tallied the Revs’ only other hit on the day, an eighth inning single, as the Revs’ two hits matched a season-low (July 19 at Charleston). York was held to just two runs in all three games of the sweep.
The Revs will look to bounce back Tuesday night at Gastonia at 6:35 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and FloBaseball.TV beginning at 6:15 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
Notes: Rodriguez’ homer was the 71st of his Revs career, three shy of matching Melky Mesa for second-most in franchise history. Hintzen’s eight innings tie a Revs season-high set three times by teammate Nick Raquet. Hintzen is the only pitcher other than Raquet to go seven innings in a game for the Revs this season (Raquet, the league’s innings leader, has done it seven times). The Revs had not had a starter go more than six innings since July 6. Hintzen threw 121 pitches, the third-highest total in an Atlantic League game this season. It was the Revs’ first complete game since Eduardo Rivera went nine innings in a win vs Southern Maryland on September 21, 2021. York finishes the season series 5-7 against Lexington.
