Revs Broadcaster Announces Retirement; Revs Announce Pioneering AI Experience
(April 1, 2026 – York, PA.): Legendary York Revolution Play-By-Play broadcaster Darrell Henry announced his retirement today, citing “exhaustion after all of the winning of the past three seasons.” Once viewed as a child prodigy after starting his career with the Revs at the tender age of 21, Henry is the only broadcaster in Revs history, having called 2,454 Revolution games. He will be replaced by an automated, AI-generated, audio play-by-play computer.
“Calling Revolution games has been a labor of love,” said Henry. “But it has gotten to be completely exhausting keeping up the pace with a team that has won 237 games and two championships in the past three seasons.” Henry also expressed a tinge of resentment at the burden of additional playoff and championship games. “I love this job, but I’d really rather just rather move on to high school football at the end of the regular season.”
Henry specifically cited the team’s league-leading offensive production under Manager Rick Forney’s leadership. “It may sound like complaining, but do you know how tiring it is to call 533 home runs in just three seasons and try to keep each one exciting? Plus, having to act excited 2,560 times that the Revs scored in the past three seasons?” Henry said. “I mean, come on – I am only human, after all.”
He also cited the challenge of keeping broadcasts interesting in an era where the Revs have dominated their cross-river rival Lancaster Stormers. “It used to be that the battle for the community cup gave me an opportunity to taunt Stormer fans,” said Henry. “But it really gets boring when you go 47-20 against them in the past three years. I’m out of material.”
“We are truly grateful to Darrell for the approximately 180,000 miles of bus rides in the past 18 years,” said Revolution President Ben Shipley. “The guy must have buns of steel. But the opportunity to replace Darrell with a machine is really exciting.”
Of the new AI broadcast system, Shipley said “Darrell has been a tremendous contributor to the Revs, but we are also excited to introduce state-of-the-art technology to replace him. Our new system will use artificial intelligence to take the video feeds from the five new cameras in our ballpark and translate those into audio. It will be fun because we can change the gender of the voice and play it with different accents. We can even broadcast in Pennsylvania Dutch, which could be a first for the game.”
Henry also has served as the General Manager of SportsRadio 98.9 WOYK since the Revs acquired the station in 2013. With his retirement, the team announced plans to drop all of its local and regional sports coverage and broadcast an automated feed of the background music from TV pharmaceutical commercials 24 hours a day.
Asked about his future plans, Henry did not rely on the cliched trope about spending more time with his family. “No – not really, he said. I mostly plan to sit in the basement and watch Phillies games.”
