The York Revolution were within one strike of winning their fifth in a row, but a two-out rally by the Lancaster Barnstormers in the ninth tied the score before the Barnstormers went on to win 5-4 in 10 innings on Friday night in front of 3,459 fans at PeoplesBank Park. York’s Freedom Division first place lead over Lancaster is cut to one game, with the series continuing on Saturday night.
Lancaster struck first courtesy of a Josh Bell leadoff home run in the second inning off of Revs starter Jay Gause. The right hander would battle his way through five innings, only giving up two runs, the second also driven in by Bell on a two-out single in the fifth to give the Barnstormers a 2-0 lead. Gause struck out five in the game, but exited with his team trailing by two.
The Revs finally got to Lancaster starter Brad Bergesen in the sixth. With one out, Isaias Tejeda reached on an infield hit and Michael Burgess followed with a rocket just inside of the right field foul pole to knot the score at 2-2. The home run was Burgess’ 14th of the season. Telvin Nash was up next and followed suit, launching a solo blast to dead center field, to give the Revs a 3-2 advantage.
The Revs tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on a Chase Simpson single up the middle to plate Jared Mitchell, who walked two batters prior, making it 4-2 York.
Brad Allen came on for a save opportunity in the ninth and quickly retired his first two batters. Allen ran into trouble, giving up a bloop single to Beau Amaral, a walk to Garrett Weber, and a Cole Garner single to load the bases. That brought Sean Halton to the plate, and after fouling off several pitches, Halton lined a double down the left field line to tie the game at 4-4. A walk loaded the bases before Michael Click was summoned out of the bullpen, retiring Bell on a line out to end the frame.
John Kuchno set the Revs down in order in the home ninth, sending Game 14 in this year’s War of the Roses to extra innings.
Click stayed on for the tenth and got the first two outs quickly, but Tyler Clark lined a single to left center to get the top of the order back to the plate. Amaral followed with another single, bouncing one over the glove of Nash at first to put runners at the corners. Weber followed with a line drive single to right, scoring Clark to give the Barnstormers the 5-4 edge.
Lancaster turned to closer Anthony Carter in the ninth, and the right hander set down the Revs 1-2-3 to pick up his 26th save and seal the comeback win.
The series resumes Saturday at 6:30 p.m. when the Revs send Victor Mateo (6-7, 3.88) to the mound to face off with lefty Tommy Shirley (2-4, 6.57). It’s Bike Night presented by 1st Capital Harley-Davidson as well as Youth Football Night featuring an appearance by Super Bowl Champ and former Baltimore Raven Jacoby Jones. The Revs will also launch Post-game fireworks presented by Gingerich Landscaping & Excavating. The night features a fidget spinner giveaway to the first 1,000 fans through the gates. Jared Mitchell extended his home on base streak to 30 in a row with a pair of walks. Nash’s home run was his ninth in 26 games, driving in 26 over that span. It was also the 37th of his Revs career (141 games), the eighth most in York history. Tejeda tallied his 43rd multi-hit game of the season, extending his hitting streak to nine in a row. Nash also extended his hitting streak to eight straight, and Alexi Casilla pushed his hitting streak to seven in a row. The Revs hit back-to-back home runs for the second time this season. York fell to 4-5 on the year in extra inning contests.
