(July 19, 2017 – Waldorf, Md.): The York Revolution pounded out 17 hits and Jay Gause picked up his fourth win as the Revs won the rubber match of their series, 8-2 over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Wednesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. The Revs improve to 7-6 in the second half, jumping back ahead of the Crabs into a tie for first place, and return home to open a seven-game homestand on Thursday night.
Gause (4-1) was dominant, retiring 21 of 25 batters faced as only two of Southern Maryland’s batters reached against the righty (Zach Wilson and Michael Snyder, twice each). Gause fired five 1-2-3 innings and went a season-high seven frames, allowing just three hits and two runs, walking one and striking out seven.
The Blue Crabs took a first inning lead as Wilson walked and Snyder doubled him home, but Gause struck out four of the next five batters and retired the next seven in-a-row.
York responded immediately with three runs in the second inning, going in front for good. Luis Cruz and Carlos Triunfel got things started with singles and Jared Mitchell bunted both runners ahead. Dayron Varona cashed in with a two-run single to right field giving York a 2-1 lead. Varona set up the next run with a hustle play on the bases, dashing to third on a single to left by Ryan Dent. That allowed Alonzo Harris to pick up an RBI when the Revs’ leadoff man legged out an attempted double play turn, giving the Revs a 3-1 advantage.
The Revs plated two more in the third. With one out, it was Michael Burgess and Cruz who set the table with singles, and Triunfel skied a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Burgess. Mitchell reached on an infield single to keep the inning alive, and Varona again came up with a big hit, lacing an RBI single to right-center.
The Blue Crabs cut the lead to 5-2 with a run in the fourth as Wilson doubled and Snyder singled to put runners at the corners with no outs, but Gause allowed only one run on a sacrifice fly by L.J. Hoes. Gause would go on to retire his final 12 batters faced of the night.
The Revs again increased the lead with a run in the fifth as Mitchell singled with two outs and scored on a Varona triple to the gap in right-center, chasing Southern Maryland starter Pat McCoy (2-5) who allowed six runs on 12 hits in 4.2 innings.
York added two more runs in the seventh on a Mitchell RBI double to left and a Varona sac fly.
Michael Click and Ricardo Gomez finished it off with scoreless innings out of the Revolution bullpen.
The Revs tallied 17 hits in each of their two wins in the three-game series, and were paced by Tejeda, Cruz, Mitchell, and Varona who all enjoyed three-hit games in Wednesday’s victory. Cruz scored three times, and Varona led the way with five RBI.
Notes: Alexi Casilla extended his hitting streak to 17 consecutive games with a bunt single in the sixth; it is the league’s longest active streak, the second longest in the league this season, and ties the tenth longest in Revs history (Jose Herrera, 2011). Tejeda extended his hitting streak to 10 consecutive games. Varona’s five RBI marked his fourth game of three RBI or more in just 19 games played, and came within one of matching a Revs’ season high for RBI in a game. The Revs have won five consecutive series finales, and are now 3-1-1 in their last five series, having gone 10-6 overall on that stretch. The Revs have also won each of their first two division series on the road in the second half. York righty Victor Mateo (3-5, 3.79) faces Sugar Land right-hander Bobby Blevins (4-5, 4.66) in Thursday’s opener at 6:30 p.m. It is Sensory Friendly Night and Maple Donuts Night at PeoplesBank Park.
