(May 18, 2023 – Central Islip, NY): The York Revolution endured a frustrating evening from the start, falling to the Long Island Ducks 18-3 in the rubber match of their series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark on Thursday evening.
York appeared poised for a good start offensively, loading the bases on walks with one out in the first, but Long Island spot starter Wladimir Pinto escaped unscathed with a strikeout and a pop up.
The Revs got a leadoff walk by Trey Martin who stole his 10th bag to start the second inning, and Alexis Pantoja blooped a single to put runners at the corners, but again Pinto danced out of trouble before leaving the game after two innings with reported shoulder tightness.
The Ducks broke through with four runs in the bottom of the second, with the damage coming on a two-run double to right center by Dustin Woodcock and a two-out, two-run single up the middle by Daniel Murphy.
Long Island plated a pair of unearned runs in the third as Philip Caulfield took advantage of an error earlier in the inning with a two-run single to right.
The rout was on as the Ducks ripped off another four-spot in the fourth to make it a 10-0 game, as Murphy stroked an RBI double to left, Sam Travis singled to center to plate another run, and Caulfield drove in two more on a base hit to center.
York’s bullpen settled things down for a time as J.P. Woodward logged 1.2 scoreless and Carlos Espinal, activated earlier in the day, turned in a strong two-inning performance, yielding just a bloop double.
After threatening throughout the early innings but failing to score, the offense finally got on the board in the eighth as Ryan January ripped a two-out RBI infield single that ricocheted off Travis at first, allowing Jalen Miller to scoot all the way home from second base. Trent Giambrone (12-game hitting streak) blasted a two-run homer to left, his fourth in the last six games, making it a 10-3 game.
The Ducks tied a season-high for runs in an inning with eight scoring on nine hits in the bottom of the eighth, with Woodcock’s three-run homer to right center and Travis’ two-run double to left center supplying the bulk of the production.
The 18 runs allowed are tied for the fourth most in a game against the Revs all-time, and the 22 hits allowed are tied for third most and is the highest total allowed in a game since 2011.
Four Ducks tallied at least three hits led by Murphy’s four-hit night. Murphy and Travis drove in three apiece while Caulfield totaled four RBI and Woodcock led the way with a five-RBI night.
The Revs drew nine walks in addition to their seven hits, but stranded 11 runners.
Revs starter J.T. Hintzen (0-3) suffered the loss, saddled with 10 runs (eight earned) in 3.1 innings.
The Revs will turn their attention to their series in Lancaster against the Barnstormers, beginning Friday night at 6:30 p.m. York lefty Denson Hull faces Lancaster’s Jacob Lemoine in the opener. York fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and FloBaseball.TV beginning at 6:10 p.m. with Darrell Henry and Keith Noonan on the call.
