(August 1, 2021 – Lexington, KY): The York Revolution stormed back from a six-run deficit to tie the game, but ultimately lost a 9-7 series finale to the Lexington Legends on Sunday evening at Lexington Legends Ballpark. The Revs are denied a series sweep as their three-game winning streak is halted, but conclude the six-game home-and-home set by winning four of the six meetings.
The Revs plated the game’s first run in the top of the first inning as Carlos Castro slugged a two-out RBI double to the gap in right-center for a 1-0 lead.
Lexington came out of the gates with three consecutive multi-run innings, building a 7-1 lead after three innings of play.
The Legends scored three times in the first on a Tillman Pugh RBI double to left, a Jordan Pacheco infield single, and a double play grounder that produced a run.
A two-out infield single by Ben Aklinski kept the second inning alive before Roberto Baldoquin lined a two-run homer to left to make it a 5-1 Lexington lead.
Omar Artsen’s RBI double to left-center and Chris Fornaci’s run-scoring single to right brought home two more in the third as Lexington’s lead peaked.
Coming off three consecutive comeback victories, the Revs began their path back as Welington Dotel crushed an opposite field homer to right in the top of the fourth, his second in as many nights.
James Harris and Jack Kenley drew walks from Legends starter J.J. Hoover and Melky Mesa singled to left to load the bases in the top of the fifth. Castro closed the gap to one run on one swing of the bat with a grand slam down the right field line, giving him a season-high five RBI and bringing the Revs within 7-6.
Osmy Gregorio hammered a solo homer to right in the top of the sixth, his second in three games, as the Revs suddenly pulled even at 7-7.
It remained that way until the bottom of the eighth when the Legends loaded the bases on walks and pinch-hitter Jake Romanski lined a two-run single off the glove of third baseman Josue Herrera and into left field providing the final margin.
Notes: Castro’s grand slam is the third of the season for the Revs (Carlos Franco – June 3 at Gastonia, Nellie Rodriguez – June 6 at Lancaster). Rodriguez saw a 15-game hitting streak end with a pinch-hit ground out in the ninth; the streak was the fourth-longest in the league this season and four shy of the top mark. The Revs slugged nine home runs in the series with six going to the opposite field including all three in Sunday’s game. Revs starter Duke von Schamann rebounded from the first three innings to work six innings total, retiring his final eight batters faced in the no-decision. York opens a three-game series in Lancaster on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the final game of the Atlantic League season’s first half.
