(August 30th, 2023 – York, Pa.): The York Revolution swept a doubleheader against the Long Island Ducks, winning 14-5 and 6-0 on Wednesday night at WellSpan Park. York used a 15-hit attack to bludgeon the Ducks in the opener, while local product Cody Brittain combined on a two-hit shutout for his first pro victory in the nightcap.
The Revs were the road team in their own park in the opener as the game was a makeup from a postponement at Long Island on July 16.
York struck first off of Ducks starter Justin Alintoff in the top of the first. After walks by Tomo Otosaka and Drew Mendoza, Jacob Rhinesmith lined a base hit over shortstop loading the bases, and Troy Stokes Jr. blooped an RBI single to center field for the game’s first run. Richard Urena ripped one to first that was knocked down for a ground out, but another run scored as York led 2-0 right away.
The Revs scored two more in the top of the third on a two-run double in the right center field gap by Urena, multiplying the lead to 4-0.
After a costly error on a potential inning-ending double play in the bottom of the third, Alex Dickerson launched a grand slam to right center off Revs starter Nick Raquet to tie the game at 4-4.
York responded in a big way with a six-run top of the fourth against Alintoff (2-2). York started the inning with a double by Jhon Nunez, an RBI double to right by Alexis Pantoja (nine-game hitting streak), a ground-rule RBI double to left center by Trent Giambrone, an infield single by Otosaka, and an RBI single to right by Mendoza as the uprising was built on five consecutive hits. After a line drive double play, Stokes Jr. capitalized with an RBI single to left and Trey Martin drove in two with a double to right center field capping a six-run inning, the Revs’ biggest since August 6, as they led 10-4.
Jacob Rhinesmith added an RBI single in the top of the fifth to make it 11-4.
Nunez cranked a line drive two-run homer off the top of the Arch Nemesis in left to expand the lead to 13-4.
Long Island put up a run in the bottom of the inning as Joe DeCarlo hit an RBI double off of reliever Ben Dum to cut it to 13-5.
York added another run in the seventh after an RBI single by Urena (3-for-4, four RBI), providing the final margin.
Will Carter came in to lock down the win with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh.
Raquet (12-7) struck out seven in five innings including five consecutive hitters at one point, earning his 12th victory to tie Gastonia’s Zach Mort for the league lead in wins and move into the top five in a single season in Revs history, becoming the Revs’ first 12-game winner since 2018 (Mitch Atkins).
York’s 14 run attack was the Revs’ biggest since a 16-5 victory vs. Spire City on August 6. The Revs pounded 15 hits including five doubles and a homer, and walked six times while striking out just once.
It marked the second time in franchise history (both this season) that York won a game as the visiting team at WellSpan Park (also July 5 vs. Charleston).
Game two featured Brittain making his second pro start, facing Ducks righty Justin Courtney on the mound.
Martin opened the scoring with a two-run home run down the right field line in the bottom of the first, giving the Revs a 2-0 lead on his career-high 15th of the season.
York loaded the bases in the third off reliever Tom Hackimer who walked four total in the inning and allowed a Nunez ground out to plate a run, making it 3-0 York.
The Revs added three more in the fifth as Martin greeted lefty Jake Fishman with a leadoff single, and running on the pitch, scored all the way from first on a Mendoza RBI double to left. Mendoza scored on a wild pitch, and Urena plated a run with a single on a pop up that went off the glove of Brantley Bell in right field making it 6-0 York.
Brittain (1-0) was brilliant, tossing 5.1 innings of scoreless ball in a combined two-hit shutout, allowing only consecutive singles in the top of the second inning. His ERA through two career starts is 1.59.
Nelvin Correa got the final two outs of the sixth and Zach Neff put on the finishing touches, walking one but retiring the other three as the Revs won 6-0 and notched their third doubleheader sweep of the season and their second all-time against the Ducks (also August 21, 2012).
The shutout win is the sixth of the year for the Revs and second in the last five games.
Revs righty J.T. Hintzen (8-6, 5.06) squares off with Long Island lefty Kyle Lobstein (4-4, 4.90) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to wrap up the homestand. It is PeoplesBank Client Appreciation Night and Hunger Free Thursday presented by Members 1st Federal Credit Union.
