(August 31, 2017 – Central Islip, NY): The York Revolution scored seven times in the top of the third and made it stand up in an 8-5 victory over the Long Island Ducks on Thursday night in front of 4,408 fans at Bethpage Ballpark. The Revs win the final two games of the four-game series to earn a split and move back into sole possession of first place at 31-23 in the second half. York continues its road trip to Bridgeport on Friday evening.
Long Island grabbed an early lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. Jordan Hinshaw led things off with a single to center, moved to third on an errant pickoff throw, and scored on a single to right by Delta Cleary, Jr. giving the Ducks a lead two batters in. Revs starter Victor Mateo rolled a double play, but Marc Krauss launched a homer to right, his 20th of the season, giving the Ducks a 2-0 lead.
It remained that way until the third, when the Revs put together their fifth inning of seven runs or more this season, including their third in less than three weeks. Travis Witherspoon worked a walk to lead off. Carlos Triunfel laid down a bunt single, and the Revs ended up with runners at second and third when Ducks pitcher John Brownell threw to an uncovered first base. Alonzo Harris ripped an RBI single to left and stole second base to again put runners at second and third. Alexi Casilla tied the game with an RBI ground out. Walks to Isaias Tejeda and Telvin Nash loaded the bases for Michael Burgess who struck a line drive two-run double to left-center, giving York the lead. With the infield in, Jared Mitchell chopped a grounder to second that was mishandled by Elmer Reyes for an error, with Nash scoring and Mitchell picking up an RBI. Mitchell stole second base, drawing a high throw from catcher Alex Burg which brought Burgess home from third. Cleary booted the ball in center field, allowing Mitchell to come all the way around to score on the Ducks’ fourth error of the inning. York plated its seven runs on only three hits.
The Ducks inched back with three consecutive hits in the fourth as Reyes drove in a run on an infield knock to make it 7-3. Long Island also strung together three straight hits in the fifth as Lew Ford drove in a run to cut it to 7-4, ending the night of Mateo after 4.1 innings.
Michael Click (3-1), the first of five relievers used by the Revs, retired Krauss on a deep fly ball to right center with Witherspoon making a lunging, tumbling grab on the warning track for the second out in the fifth inning. Click struck out Ruben Gotay to end the threat, ultimately earning the win.
Joe Van Meter ended up in a bases loaded, no-out jam in the sixth after a single and two walks, and fell behind Dan Lyons with a 2-0 count. Van Meter rebounded to strike out Lyons, induce a fielder’s choice grounder on which Triunfel threw home from third base for a force out, and strike out Hinshaw to leave the bases loaded.
Brownell (9-4) retired his final 11 batters to last six innings, and the Revs had 14 consecutive hitters retired before Tejeda singled to lead off the eighth against reliever Patrick Crider. Mitchell ripped an RBI single to left with two outs in the inning to plate Tejeda, providing the Revs with an insurance run and an 8-4 lead.
After a 1-2-3 seventh inning, Chase Huchingson remained in to retire Angelo Songco on a fly out in the bottom of the eighth. Ricardo Gomez entered to strike out Reyes and Alex Burg, sending it to the ninth.
Long Island loaded the bases with one out in the ninth to bring Krauss to the plate as the tying run, but Brad Allen jammed the cleanup man on a shallow sac fly to center, and struck out Gotay looking to secure the 8-5 victory.
The Revs won despite being out-hit 12-5. York stranded just two base runners, while Revs pitchers left nine Ducks runners on base.
