(July 3, 2017 – Bridgeport, Ct.): The York Revolution ran into a strong effort from Jonathan Albaladejo, as the Bridgeport Bluefish claimed the opening game of the season’s second half, 4-2 in front of 5,105 fans at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday evening.
Albaladejo (5-6) struck out a season-high 11 and walked only two, holding York to two runs on six hits in 6.1 innings to pick up the win.
Isaias Tejeda provided the Revs with a promising start, lining a solo home run to left in the top of the first, his 10th of the year.
Bridgeport answered right away, as D’Arby Myers reached on an infield single, stole second, and took third on a throwing error, the Revs’ only defensive miscue in the last seven games. The Bluefish leadoff man then scored on a Luis Hernandez double to the gap in right-center, and Hernandez would come around to score on a pair of ground outs, the second of which by Jose Gil gave Bridgeport a 2-1 lead in the first.
The Bluefish added a run on three consecutive singles in the bottom of the fifth, with Daniel Fields serving an RBI single into left-center to make it 3-1.
Revs starter Steve Janas (1-4) rebounded with a six-pitch sixth inning to finish strong, tying for the team lead with his sixth quality start despite suffering the loss. He allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings of work, holding opponents to three runs or fewer for the 11th time in his 14 starts.
The Revs drew within a run in the seventh as Jared Mitchell yanked a one-out double to right and scored on a single into right by Chase Simpson who picked up his first Revolution RBI. Reliever Brian Moran entered for Albaladejo and recorded an inning-ending double play, however, as Bridgeport’s bullpen retired all seven batters faced. Zac Grotz worked a 1-2-3 eighth, and David Carpenter did the same in the ninth to collect his league-leading 25th save.
The Bluefish tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with singles by Ozney Guillen and Myers and a walk to Hernandez with no outs. Revs lefty Luke Westphal entered and struck out Jose Cuevas for the first out, but a wild pitch brought home Guillen for the insurance run before Westphal fanned the next two batters.
Notes: The Revs fall to 2-7 against the Bluefish, 1-4 at Harbor Yard. Bridgeport has won five straight, matching Somerset for the league’s best overall record at 42-29. York’s three-game winning streak is snapped. Revs starting pitchers have held opponents to three runs or fewer in six consecutive games and seven of the last eight contests. The Revs have made only three errors in the last 15 games, and just 10 errors in the last 31 games. Their 46 errors are the second fewest in the league. York drops to 6-5 all-time in second half openers.
