Trailing by five runs in the second inning, it looked like a plot that had been written before, but then the York Revolution offense caught fire, batting around in back to back innings and tallying 19 hits on the night in a 15-9 smashing of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Wednesday evening in front of 2,741 fans at PeoplesBank Park.
The Revs scored first in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Isaias Tejeda to score Alonzo Harris, who reached one batter prior on an infield single.
The Blue Crabs then put up a big inning in response against Revs starter Logan Williamson, as Southern Maryland batted around and plated six, highlighted by a grand slam by Edwin Garcia, his first home run of the year.
Trailing 6-1, the Revs responded in timely fashion. The first three batters of the second inning all reached for the Revs as Dayron Varona served a single down the right field line to plate Angel Franco who led off the inning with an opposite field double to left center. Later in the inning, Alonzo Harris and Tejeda doubled back-to-back, each plating a run, as the Revs cut the deficit to 6-5.
Then in the home half of the third the Revs would take the lead as each of the first six batters reached base, with Varona driving a double down the line in left to plate the first two runs of the frame. Varona smacked three hits and drove in four in his York debut. Ryan Dent followed with an RBI single, and then Travis Witherspoon tripled off the wall in right to bring in two more. The Revs batted around in the inning, scoring six to take an 11-6 lead.
The offense wasn’t done. An inning later Luis Cruz and Franco reached on back-to-back singles, ahead of a Jared Mitchell run-scoring single through the right side. Varona followed with an RBI ground out, and then Dent brought home Mitchell with a single back up the middle as the lead swelled to 14-6.
Jay Gause took over for Williamson in the third, striking out four over three innings. He retired his first six in relief before giving up two runs on three doubles in the fifth, as the Blue Crabs cut the deficit to 14-8.
Michael Click allowed a solo home run to Zach Wilson in the sixth, but it was too little, too late for Southern Maryland as Hawtin Buchanan, Chase Huchingson, and Brad Allen combined to set down the next nine batters to end it. The Revs also picked up an add-on run on a Dent sacrifice fly in the eighth to bring home Varona, who doubled to straight away center to lead off the inning.
The Revs will look to earn a series split on Thursday night as they send Frank Gailey (5-5, 5.20) to the hill to face off with Drew Hayes in (2-2, 4.41) in the series finale on Dance Night at PeoplesBank Park. The 19 hits are the most in a nine-inning game for the Revs since August 13, 2014 in a 10-1 win at Camden. The 15 runs are the Revs’ most since a 15-2 win vs. Southern Maryland on August 8, 2015. It is the first time the Revs have scored at least 15 runs on at least 19 hits in the same game since totaling 23 hits in a 22-6 win vs. Long Island on August 31, 2012. The Revs snap a season-long seven-game losing streak, and defeat the Blue Crabs at home for just the second time this season. It was also the first time this year that York has won a game on a Wednesday, after going 0-10 to begin the season.
