(July 31, 2024 – York, Pa.):  The York Revolution saw a late lead slip away, eventually falling in extras on Wednesday night, 9-4 to the Long Island Ducks at WellSpan Park.
The Ducks opened the scoring in the second inning when Aaron Antonini homered off of Jon Olsen, just clearing the foul pole in right field.
York managed just one baserunner their first time through the order against Long Island starter Mike Montgomery.
With two outs in the third, however, Matt McDermott and Rudy Martin Jr strung together back-to-back singles. That set the table for Donovan Casey to blast a three-run shot to left center, his 15th of the season, which put York up 3-1.
Zander Wiel drove a two-out home run of his own in the fourth inning, a solo shot to right field extending the lead to 4-1.
Olsen retired 11 consecutive hitters from the second to the sixth until Ivan Castillo singled with one out in the frame. Olsen retired the next two but was finally touched in the seventh when Zach Racusin singled home Antonini who had started the frame with a double and scored despite running through a stop sign when Casey’s throw home couldn’t be handled. Olsen got a double play grounder before being lifted with a 4-2 lead.
Denny Bentley induced a grounder to end the seventh. Frankie Bartow pitched a scoreless eighth, and Matt Turner entered in the ninth looking for the save.
Frank Schwindel led off the ninth with a single before Ryan McBroom narrowly missed a game tying homer, instead flying out to the warning track in right center field. After a walk to Antonini, Racusin blooped a ball that dropped by the right field line and was ruled fair by first base umpire Buzz Albert. Despite argument from Revolution players, it was a game-tying two-run double for Racusin and an unfortunate blown save for Turner who got out of the inning without any further damage after a pair of strikeouts, but with the game tied 4-4.
York went down in order in the ninth to send the game to extras.
To lead off the tenth, Nick Heath grounded a ball to short and Alfredo Reyes tried to throw to third to nail lead runner Kole Kaler. The throw hit Kaler, however, deflecting off his helmet and towards the dugout allowing him to score on the error. Two batters later, Castillo singled up the middle to add another run. Things continued to fall apart for York as Antonini drove a two-run triple to right center field and later scored on a wild pitch, giving the Ducks a five spot in the inning and a 9-4 lead.
York got a baserunner on a hit by pitch in their half of the tenth inning but could not get anything across against Ramon Santos.
The Revs have dropped back-to-back games and will look to avoid being swept for the first time all season on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. as LHP Zach Neff squares off with Ducks righty Chris Ellis. It is DownTown’s Birthday, a Hunger Free Thursday presented by Members 1st Federal Credit Union, and the Fan Club Hat Auction. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Shipley Energy Ticket Office.
Notes: The Revs have dropped back-to-back games for just the fourth time all season along with a pair of season-high three-game slides. They had won 14 of their previous 17 games. The loss snaps a six-series winning streak; they had also won 14 of their previous 15 series. York falls to 29 games above the .500 mark at 57-28, still one off the league’s best overall mark, while Long Island creeps above the .500 mark at 43-42. Olsen took a no-decision, denied of a league-tying ninth win; he struck out four batters, moving into the league lead with 99 strikeouts on the year. The five-run 10th inning is the biggest extra inning allowed by the Revs since a six-run 10th on May 10, 2023 vs Long Island. Casey’s league-leading RBI total climbs to 95 with his three-run homer; it is tied for fifth-most in a season in Revs history and just 12 shy of the record set by Chris Nowak in 2012. Casey has 27 RBI against the Ducks, one shy of Melky Mesa’s franchise record for most against a single opponent in a season series set in 2021 vs Lancaster. Wiel’s homer accounted for his 50th RBI of the season and his 40th extra-base hit; it was his 18th homer of the year, five of which have come with York, and the 79th long ball of his Atlantic League career. Reyes had a 10-game hitting streak snapped.
