(July 18, 2018) — The York Revolution were on the wrong end of a gut-wrenching extra-inning marathon, falling 4-3 to the Lancaster Barnstormers in 11 innings on Wednesday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
After Revs starter Logan Williamson and Barnstormers starter Joe Gardner traded zeros through the first two innings, Lancaster got on the board in the third as Nate Coronado led off with a bloop double down the right field line and came in to score on Tyler Bortnick’s RBI groundout, giving the Barnstormers a 1-0 lead.
The Revs came right back in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Michael Burgess hit a sac fly to center field scoring Alexi Casilla to tie the game at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the top of the sixth. Garrett Granitz took over for Gardner and got the leadoff batter, but walked Melky Mesa to put the go-ahead runner on. Lefty Jared Lakind came on to pitch to Burgess but walked him, and was yanked from the game in favor of Huascar Brazoban. Isaias Tejeda was the first batter to face Brazoban and greeted him with a go-ahead line drive RBI single to right field, scoring Mesa to put the Revs ahead 2-1.
Williamson’s night was done after five strong innings, allowing just one run. He stranded seven runners, including stranding the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth.
Luke Westphal retired the Barnstormers in order in the sixth after York had taken the lead, but the Barnstormers tied the game off Ricardo Gomez in the seventh. Coronado set the table again, reaching on a leadoff single and scoring the tying run on Bortnick’s sac fly to right, making it a 2-2 game after seven frames.
Scott Shuman entered the game in the top of the eighth for Lancaster and proceeded to load the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch. Shuman stayed in to face Tejeda with the bags juiced and Tejeda delivered a go-ahead sac fly to left, as the Revs retook the lead at 3-2.
Jose Cuevas followed the sac fly with a bloop single to right-center, but Barnstormers right fielder Blake Gailen threw out Mesa, attempting to score from second, at the plate to keep it a one-run game.
The Revs went to Junior Rincon for the bottom of the eighth and he retired the Barnstormers in order, picking up two strikeouts in the frame.
Grant Sides was called on for the save in the bottom of the ninth, but the Barnstormers chipped together a run-scoring rally to hand Sides his second blown save in as many days. After a leadoff single by Anderson De La Rosa, pinch-runner Carlos Garcia stole second and moved to third when Sides slipped and fell on Coronado's bunt, leading to a base hit. Coronado stole second to put the tying and winning runs in scoring position. Sides struck out Darian Sandford for the first out, but Bortnick came through with the game-tying ground out as Dent made a diving stop from short to prevent the winning run from also scoring. After an intentional walk to Blake Gailen, Ryan Casteel lofted a fly to shallow left-center where Welington Dotel made a great diving grab to force extras.
The game was delayed nearly half an hour before the start of the tenth inning to allow for a previously scheduled fireworks show to be concluded.
Matt Reynolds and James Pugliese each threw a scoreless tenth inning for their respective clubs.
The Revs threatened in the 11th after Travis Witherspoon doubled to right with two outs. Mitchell followed with a line drive single off the top of first baseman Coronado’s glove that would’ve scored Witherspoon had it gotten into right field, but Coronado leaped to knock the ball down, keeping it in the infield. Matt Marksberry relieved Stephen Johnson and retired Casilla on a ground out to end the inning.
Coronado led off the bottom of the 11th with a walkoff solo homer to right, giving the Barnstormers the 4-3 win.
Marksberry earned the win while Pugliese suffered the loss.

Notes: The Revs fall to 5-4 in the second half, one game back of first place. York is now 6-7 in the season's War of the Roses series. Mitchell stole two bases, giving him five steals in the series and 70 in his Revs career, moving past Scott Grimes (69) for second in franchise history. Gomez' appearance was the 310th of his Atlantic League career, one shy of matching Ben Grezlovski for second-most all-time. Gomez was denied of a strike out as his streak of 10 consecutive outings with multiple strikeouts came to an end.
