(June 9, 2023 – Central Islip, NY): The York Revolution saw its five-game road winning streak halted, dropping the opening game of its weekend series, 5-2 to the Long Island Ducks on Friday evening at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.
The Ducks grabbed an immediate lead as Boog Powell cracked a first inning leadoff home run to right and made it a two-run first as Sam Travis kept the frame alive with a two-out double to left and scored on Alejandro De Aza’s single to center for a 2-0 advantage.
York answered in the second as Richard Urena kept the inning alive with a two-out infield knock and Jhon Nunez smacked an RBI double down the third base line, plating Jacob Rhinesmith who had led off the inning with a base hit.
Long Island got that run back in the bottom of the second as Joe DeCarlo was hit by a pitch and immediately driven in on Tzu-Wei Lin’s triple to left center giving the Ducks a 3-1 lead.
York again pulled within a run in the fifth as Alejandro Rivero smoked an RBI double to right center, plating Trey Martin who had singled, making it a 3-2 contest.
Long Island again had an answer, extending its lead in the bottom of the sixth as Adeiny Hechavarria ripped an RBI triple down the left field line to make it 4-2.
Revs lefty Denson Hull entered to get the final two outs of the sixth stranding Hechavarria at third but was tagged with a run in the seventh on a Brantley Bell sac fly.
York loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth as Drew Mendoza walked and Urena and Nunez singled, but Lin made a sprawling stop on a soft liner toward right off the bat of Alexis Pantoja to deny the Revs of a rally.
York went quietly in the ninth against Ducks closer Kevin Quackenbush.
Long Island starter Ian Clarkin (2-1) picked up the win, limiting York to two runs on seven hits in six innings while striking out 10 batters.
Revs starter Carlos Espinal (2-1) suffered the loss, touched for four runs in 5.1 innings. He retired 10 straight at one point despite the setback.
Notes: Mendoza lost an 11-game hitting streak. The Revs were held to two runs for the first time since May 27; they had scored a league-best 8.8 runs per game over the last nine, scoring at least seven in eight of those nine. They have dropped back-to-back games for the first time since May 19-20. York’s five-game road winning streak was its longest since a six-gamer in 2021 and was tied for the third-longest in team history. Revs righty Jorge Martinez (2-2, 7.13) faces Long Island lefty McKenzie Mills (0-1, 18.00) at 6:35 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and FloBaseball.TV beginning at 6:15 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
