(May 22, 2024 – Waldorf, Md.): The York Revolution squared its series with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs thanks to a late offensive uprising, winning 10-4 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Wednesday night. The Revs improve to 14-10 on the season and move within a game of first place with the win.
York was stifled offensively early in the game as Southern Maryland starter Garrett Martin set down nine of his first 10 batters faced.
Revs starter Aaron Fletcher (3-1) was also sharp, but fell behind 1-0 in the third thanks to a two-out RBI infield single by Anthony Brocato.
The Revs quickly answered in the fourth with Jacob Rhinesmith driving in the game-tying tally on a fielder’s choice.
David Washington cracked a tiebreaking opposite field solo homer to left center in the sixth for a 2-1 lead, extending his hitting streak to 17 consecutive games to begin his Revs career with his eighth long ball in a York uniform.
Southern Maryland went ahead with two in the home sixth as Juan Kelly tripled to center and scored on Josh Broughton’s single to right for the tying run. Gabe Wurtz lined a two-out RBI single to left giving the hosts a fleeting 3-2 advantage.
The Revs came alive in the late innings and took the lead for good with five runs against the Crabs bullpen in the seventh. Ciaran Devenney and Alfredo Reyes took walks from lefty Alex Katz (1-1) and Matt McDermott slapped a two-strike RBI single to right, tying the game at 3-3. Rudy Martin Jr bunted and reached on an error to load the bases, and the Revs caught a break when Donovan Casey bounced back to pitcher Jason Creasy whose throw home sailed high allowing two runs to score for a 5-3 lead. Washington drove an RBI ground rule double to right center, and Colton Welker (seven-game hitting streak) capped the outburst with an RBI single to left as the lead grew to 7-3.
Reyes recorded his first Revs hit, a triple down the first base line, with two outs in the eighth and scored on McDermott’s infield single for an insurance run.
York plated two more in the ninth as Casey and Washington led off with singles, setting up a run-scoring wild pitch and a Kobe Kato sac fly to reach double digits in the scoring column.
Jon Olsen logged his third save in long relief, firing the final three innings and allowing only an RBI double to Michael Wielansky in the ninth. It was just the second run allowed by Olsen, who entered the night with a league-best 0.47 ERA, in 22.1 innings on the season.
Notes: York improves to 10-4 on the road. The win snaps a seven-game skid at Regency Furniture Stadium as the Revs earn their first victory in Southern Maryland since July 10, 2022. McDermott (3-for-5) recorded his third consecutive three-hit game while extending his hitting streak to nine consecutive games; he has multiple hits in seven of his last eight and has not reached safely in all 20 games he’s played with York. Washington’s 17-game streak is the longest by a Revs hitter to begin his York career. The Revs stole four bases increasing their league-leading total to 67 steals; they have stolen four or more bases in 12 of their 24 games this season.
Up Next: York righty Chris Vallimont (2-1, 3.42) faces Southern Maryland’s Daryl Thompson (1-3, 6.52) in Thursday’s rubber match at 10:35 a.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and FloBaseball.TV beginning at 10:30 a.m.
