(April 5) The York Revolution have announced four more player signings for the 2017 campaign, welcoming left-hander Chase Huchingson while also adding right-handers Hawtin Buchanan, Melvin Mercedes, and Curtis Partch. The signings were announced by manager Mark Mason Tuesday evening on “Revs Hot Stove Weekly presented by Shipley Energy” on SportsRadio 1350 WOYK.
Huchingson enters his eighth professional season, having started with the Mets as a non-drafted free agent in 2010. He has spent his entire career in the Mets organization, compiling a 25-16 record and a 3.31 ERA over the course of his career. Last season, the left-hander spent the majority of his time with Triple-A Las Vegas, striking out 26 in 27.1 innings of work.
“We’re excited to add him, we know he has good stuff, the reports have been good, the video that I’ve seen has been good as well, and he’s another guy that’s hungry to come in and prove himself,” Mason said on WOYK.
A native of Fayetteville, AR, the 6-foot-5-inch Huchingson was drafted out of high school by the Rangers in 2007 and again by the Astros in 2008 but did not sign. Instead, he attended the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith before transferring to the University of Central Arkansas. His brother Jamin also played minor league baseball in the White Sox organization.
At just 23 years old, Buchanan becomes the youngest player on the Revs roster. He is also the tallest, standing at a whopping 6 feet 8 inches. Selected by the Mariners in the 20th round of the 2014 draft, Buchanan played two years in the Mariners system before playing for Birmingham-Bloomfield of the United Shore Professional Baseball League in 2016. There he posted a 4.21 ERA and struck out 44 in 25.2 innings in relief. In his career he averages better than 13 strikeouts per nine innings.
“This is a young guy who I think can be really exciting and intimidating,” said Mason. “I know from talking to him on the phone that he’s a little bit of a middle linebacker type, mentally, so I like that.”
Last season Buchanan reworked his mechanics, and the efforts paid dividends as he went from throwing a fastball in the high-80s to one in the mid-90s over the course of the campaign. A native of Biloxi, MS, who was a three-sport star during his prep days, Buchanan was selected to play in the Mississippi High School Baseball All-Star Game while also being named the offensive MVP of his football team and leading his basketball team to a state title, all before going on to pitch collegiately at Ole Miss.
Mercedes was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tigers in 2008 out of the Dominican Republic. After beginning his career in the Dominican Summer League, he quickly ascended the Tigers minor league ranks, making his Major League debut for Detroit at age 23 with two perfect innings in relief in a game against the Mariners on August 15, 2014. He rung up Kyle Seager for his first big league punch out and came back to strike out the next batter, Mike Zunio, as well.
“He’s another guy that has already tasted some big league time,” said Mason. “I know he’s excited to get back there, and I’m sure he’ll work hard coming into camp.”
Last season, Mercedes pitched in the Mexican League for Oaxaca, where he posted a 5-2 record and a 4.73 ERA in 35 appearances. In his minor league career, he has won 16 games to go along with 58 saves and a 3.56 ERA.
Partch comes to York for his 11th professional season. Originally selected by Cincinnati in the 27th round of the 2007 MLB draft, Partch has made it to the Majors in three seasons, pitching for both the Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Another imposing presence on the mound, Partch stands 6 foot 5 inches, and, at age 30, provides the Revs a veteran presence at the back end of the bullpen.
“He has really good stuff,” said Mason. “With his experience level and being a reliever the overwhelming majority of his career, this is a guy that we’re going to try to get at the back end of the bullpen. He’s a hard thrower with good command away from right handed hitters.”
Parch made his Major League debut June 9, 2013, with the Reds. The following week he tossed four scoreless innings in relief, matching Tony Cingrani for the team’s longest relief outing of the season. He returned to the big leagues the next year, totaling seven scoreless frames out of the Reds bullpen while notching his first Major League victory (July 11, 2014 vs. Pittsburgh).
Last year, Partch spent most of his time at Triple-A Indianapolis, posting a 2.24 ERA in 42 relief appearances, striking out 60 in 60.1 innings of work. He also made two appearances for the Pirates at the Major League level.
The Revs now have 28 players signed for the upcoming season and will unveil their final batch of preseason signings live on “Revs Hot Stove Weekly presented by Shipley Energy” on Tuesday, April 11 at 6:00 p.m.
