(September 3, 2017 – Bridgeport, Ct.): The York Revolution suffered a doubleheader sweep against the Bridgeport Bluefish on Sunday evening, falling 8-4 and 4-1 at Harbor Yard. The Revs fall to 32-26 in the second half, slipping half a game back in the division standings with 12 to play. York returns home to PeoplesBank Park to open a three-game series against the Long Island Ducks on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Sunday’s doubleheader got started after a rain delay of two hours and 54 minutes, the longest in Revolution history by 15 minutes.
The Revs struck first in the opener, scoring on a Telvin Nash RBI single to left with two outs in the first for a 1-0 lead. It was Nash’s 33rd RBI in 35 games played on the season.
Bridgeport jumped in front with three runs in the bottom of the first. Jonathan Galvez drove in the first on a one-out double, lined off the tip of third baseman Chase Simpson’s glove and down the line. Jose Cuevas followed with an RBI single to left-center, and Daniel Fields drove in the third run on a ground ball to second that resulted in an error as the Bluefish took a 3-1 lead.
Revs starter Logan Williamson settled down to work scoreless frames in the following two innings, but the Bluefish batted around to plate four runs in the fourth. Angel Rosa drove a sac fly to center to bring home the first run, Luis Hernandez added a ground rule RBI double down the left field line, and D’Arby Myers served a two-run single into shallow center past a drawn-in infield to make it 7-1.
Fields and Gustavo Molina connected on back-to-back doubles to start the fifth, producing one more run for the Bluefish. Williamson retired Ozney Guillen on a comebacker for the first out, but exited after the second out as Rosa hit a liner off the lefty’s arm, redirecting to second base for a ground out.
Alonzo Harris drilled a bases-clearing three-run double off the left field wall in the top of the sixth against reliever Manny Delcarmen, bringing the Revs within 8-4. Dayron Varona led off the inning with a single to center, extending his hitting streak to eight consecutive games. Luis Cruz was hit by a pitch in the hand, reaching base as he was forced to exit the contest. Travis Witherspoon worked a two-out walk to load the bases, setting up Harris’ knock.
Lefty Drake Britton retired the side in order in the seventh to close it out. Bridgeport starter Ross Seaton (2-3) picked up the win, allowing one run in five innings.
Michael Click retired all four batters faced out of the York bullpen.
York was stymied by Bridgeport starter Domenic Severino, making his Atlantic League debut in the second game. The right-hander struck out seven and walked none over four shutout innings, allowing just three hits. He retired his final seven batters faced.
Bridgeport grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, plating a pair of unearned runs. Fields reached on an error to lead off and stole second base, before scoring on a single to center by Galvez for the game’s first run. Andrew Lambo followed with a hit-and-run single to left with Galvez advancing to third base. Galvez scored and Lambo advanced to third when the throw from left field bounced wide, caroming all the way behind home plate on another error. York starter Jay Gause prevented a third run from scoring, recording a ground out with the infield drawn in, and a pair of pop ups to strand Lambo at third and keep it at 2-0.
The Bluefish struck for two more in the third. Luis Hernandez worked a leadoff walk, and after Gause had retired the next two batters, Field and Galvez walked to load the bases. Lambo lined a ball to left field that was misplayed by Varona for the Revs’ third error, with two runs scoring to make it 4-0.
Harris nailed a home run off the left field foul pole leading off the sixth to get the Revs on the board at 4-1. Jared Mitchell singled and stole second, and Michael Burgess walked with one out to bring the tying run to the plate but reliever Elvin Ramirez entered to record a strike out and a ground out to end the threat.
Vinnie Pestano worked a scoreless seventh for his first save. Frank DeJiulio, Jr. (4-5) picked up the win out of the Bridgeport bullpen with a perfect fifth.
Gause (9-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs, all unearned, in 3.2 innings. Joe Van Meter tossed 1.1 scoreless in relief, and Brad Allen handled a scoreless sixth inning out of the York bullpen.
