Revs Tackle Thompson, Take Second Straight vs Crabs
(August 25, 2022 – York, Pa.): In another tight affair, the York Revolution was able to squeeze out a series victory in the home portion of the six-game home-and-home slate on Thursday, knocking off Atlantic League all-time wins leader Daryl Thompson and the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs by a score of 6-4 in the rubber match at PeoplesBank Park.
Melky Mesa continued his climb up the all-time ranks in Revolution history in the second inning. After Southern Maryland loaded the bases against York starter Courtney Mack with one away, nine-hole hitter Ian Yetsko hit a fly ball to left field, and Mesa gunned down Zach Collier who had tried to tag and score at the plate. A perfect throw and perfect tag from Jhon Nunez kept the Blue Crabs off the board in the second. It was the 32nd outfield assist of Mesa’s Revs career, tying Scott Grimes for the franchise’s all-time record.
After having gone down 1-2-3 in the first against Thompson, the Revs got to the veteran righty in the second inning. They strung together four straight one-out hits, including an RBI double off the Arch Nemesis from Josue Herrera and two-run single up the middle by Nunez. Troy Stokes Jr. capped off the rally with a two-run homer over the Nemesis, his 11th of the year, and suddenly it was 5-0 York.
Southern Maryland got a run back in the third courtesy of a David Harris RBI single and took advantage of a Revs mistake to string together a rally in the fourth. After a leadoff single from Collier, Joe DeLuca tapped a grounder to third base, but Herrera’s throw to second sailed into right field allowing Collier to come all the way around to score. Two batters later, Yetsko uncorked a two-run shot that bounced off the top of the Nemesis and over for a home run, cutting the York lead to 5-4.
Mack exited the game in the sixth after a season-high 5.2 innings, leaving with a runner on first and two away. York turned to reliever Kyle Zurak who was able to retire the first hitter he faced on two pitches, closing the book on Mack (2-1, 1-0) and keeping him in line for his first York win.
York got a huge insurance run in the seventh inning. Connor Lien started the inning with a double to left, moved up to third on a wild pitch, and came in to score on a sacrifice fly on a liner to center by Elmer Reyes, making it a 6-4 game.
After Zurak and lefty Tuck Tucker combined to handle a scoreless seventh, southpaw Doug Olcese tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning out of the Revs bullpen, bridging the gap to closer Jim Fuller in the ninth.
Allowing only a one-out bunt single, Fuller shut the door in the ninth with two strikeouts, notching his 16th save of the season, record 45th of his Revs career, and the 70th of his career in the Atlantic League becoming the eighth in league history to reach that mark.
The Revs cap their 12-game homestand with a 6-6 mark, rebounding from a sweep suffered vs. Long Island by winning the series vs. Southern Maryland, and will continue the home-and-home in Waldorf, Md. this weekend with Friday’s opener getting underway at 6:35 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and the WOYK YouTube channel beginning at 6:15 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
Notes: Thursday’s victory was the 1,002nd in franchise history and the 599th as manager for Mark Mason. Olcese has gone four hitless innings in his four appearances with York, having retired 12 of 13 batters faced. Herrera (1-for-4) has hit safely in five of the last six, going 7-for-22 with two doubles, a triple, a homer, and seven RBI. Nunez (2-for-4) has three straight multi-hit games and has hit safely in seven straight, going 10-for-22 with five RBI; he has also hit safely in 14 of his last 17, batting .385 (20-for-52) with 10 RBI on that stretch.
