BOX SCORE
(June 17, 2017 – Bridgewater, NJ): For the second consecutive night, the York Revolution battled back to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning, only to fall on a walk-off hit as the Somerset Patriots won 5-4 on Saturday night in front of 6,970 fans at TD Bank Ballpark.
Trailing 4-2 and facing Patriots starter Mitch Atkins who was going for a complete game, Travis Witherspoon led off the ninth with a single to left. Alonzo Harris then reached on a throwing error by third baseman Scott Kelly. Atkins struck out Alexi Casilla on a fouled bunt attempt, but with one out Witherspoon stole third and Isaias Tejeda singled up the middle to make it a one-run game and chase Atkins. Harris advanced from first to third on the play, and would score the tying run on a groundout by pinch-hitter Michael Burgess off reliever Ronnie Shaban.
Somerset immediately threatened in the bottom of the ninth as Justin Pacchioli reached on a bloop single off reliever Ricardo Gomez (0-1) to start the inning, and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Alfredo Rodriguez. Chris Grayson then grounded out to second, moving Pacchioli to third. After a delay for a substitution in the Revs infield as Casilla exited with an apparent injury, Greg Golson ripped the first pitch down the third base line for the game-winner.
The scoring began in the second inning when Tejeda cracked a leadoff triple off the left field fence and scored on a Luis Cruz sac fly for a 1-0 York lead. The sac fly began a streak of 14 consecutive hitters retired by Atkins until Witherspoon launched an opposite field homer to right to make it 2-0 in the sixth.
York’s only two baserunners through six innings had both scored, but the Revs were unable to advance Casilla after a leadoff double in the seventh, failing to add to the lead.
Revs starter Steve Janas also allowed just two hits through six innings, taking a shutout into the seventh, but exited after back-to-back walks to start the inning. Reliever Michael Click recorded a force out at second on a bunt attempt for the first out, but Tyler Bortnick broke up the shutout with an RBI double down the left field line, and Pacchioli gave the Patriots a sudden lead with a two-run double to left-center. After a steal of third, Pacchioli scored on a Rodriguez sac fly as Somerset went ahead 4-2.
Atkins carried a three-hitter into the ninth before York’s game-tying rally unfolded.
