(July 26, 2018) — Travis Witherspoon’s walkoff single lifted the York Revolution over the Road Warriors, 5-4, in Game 2 of Thursday night’s doubleheader at PeoplesBank Park. The comeback win came after the Revs won Game 1, 7-3, to earn their second doubleheader sweep of the season.
The Road Warriors kicked off the scoring in Game 1 on Edwin Gomez’ second-inning RBI single off Revs starter Robert Carson to make it 1-0.
The Revs came right back in the bottom of the second and tied the game on Ryan Dent’s sac fly to center off Road Warriors starter Luis Cruz, making it 1-1.
In the third, Welington Dotel hit a sac fly and Michael Burgess added an RBI single to give the Revs a 3-1 lead.
The Road Warriors answered with two runs in the top of the fourth as Isaac Wenrich hit an RBI double and Gomez picked up another RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
Dent put the Revs right back in front with a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. Later in the inning, Melky Mesa tacked on three more with a two-out bases clearing double to left center, putting the Revs up 7-3.
That was all the run support Carson needed. He finished the night after six strong innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with no walks, while matching a season-high with eight strikeouts.
Jailen Peguero came on for the seventh and retired the Road Warriors in order to finish off the 7-3 win.
In Game 2, Dotel got the Revs on the board with a two-run home run to right-center off Road Warriors starter Felix Baez, giving the Revs a 2-0 lead in the first.
The Road Warriors responded and tied the game in the next half inning. Gomez plated the first run with an RBI single and Matt Hibbert added an RBI single of his own to make it 2-2. Revs starter Jonathan Sanchez limited the damage by rolling a 6-4-3 double play with runners at first and third to end the inning.
The Road Warriors took a 3-2 lead in the third on Geraldo Valentin’s sac fly to center. Chris Rivera added a solo homer over the Arch Nemesis in the fourth to make it 4-2.
Down two in the fifth, the Revs answered to tie the game. Dotel drove in a run with an RBI single to right and Burgess followed with a game-tying RBI single to right, making it 4-4.
The Revs bullpen logged scoreless ball as Josh Blanco handled the fifth in his debut, Joe Van Meter and Junior Rincon combined on a 1-2-3 sixth, and Grant Sides stranded two in a scoreless top of the seventh.
Mesa drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh and Burgess singled up the middle to put runners at the corners with the table set. Road Warriors closer Andrew Johnston recorded a pop out for the first out, but Witherspoon delivered a walkoff single up the middle to give the Revs a 5-4 win.
Notes: The walkoff win is the Revs' second of the season. It is the 65th in Revs history and 63rd at PeoplesBank Park. Witherspoon recorded the first walkoff hit of his Revs career.
