(June 17th, 2023 – York, Pa.): The York Revolution scored nine unanswered runs to turn a potential blowout loss into a close game late, but fell to the Long Island Ducks, 13-11 on Saturday night at WellSpan Park. The Revs’ five-game winning streak is halted but their first place lead in the North Division remains 1.5 games.
The Ducks started the fireworks early as Sam Travis hit an 0-2 curveball off of Revs starter Tom Sutera over the left center field wall, making it 2-0 Long Island in the top of the first.
The Revs got on the board in the bottom half of the first as Trent Giambrone walked to lead off and Tomo Otosaka banged a double off the right field wall to put runners at second and third with none out. Richard Urena lined a sacrifice fly to right scoring Giambrone. Otosaka tried to advance but was thrown out at third by catcher Joe DeCarlo as the Revs trailed 2-1 after an inning.
The Ducks added two more in the second. Chance Sisco hit an RBI single to right and another run scored on a double play as it was 4-1 Long Island.
Long Island would pull away scoring four runs in the third as Alex Dickerson nailed an RBI double to left center, Brian Goodwin smacked a run-scoring single up the middle, DeCarlo drove a sac fly to center, and Sisco blasted a solo homer onto the clubhouse roof in right field to make it 8-1.
Ruben Tejada connected on an opposite field two-run homer to right in the fifth, and Sisco belted his second of the game on a solo shot to right field in the fifth as the Ducks stormed out to an 11-1 lead.
York got a run in the bottom of the fifth as Nellie Rodriguez ripped an RBI single to right, making it an 11-2 game.
Sisco pounded an opposite field two-run homer to left center in the top of the seventh to drive Long Island’s lead to 13-2. It capped a 4-for-4 night with three home runs and five RBI for the Ducks designated hitter.
The Revs scored four times off of Long Island reliever Justin Alintoff in the bottom of the seventh on the strength of back-to-back homers by Rodriguez and Jacob Rhinesmith. Rodriguez’ was a two-run shot to right-center, the 59th long ball of his Revs career, tying Chris Nowak for fourth on the franchise’s all-time list. It was also the 1,000th hit of his pro career. Troy Stokes Jr. and Jhon Nunez both hit high flies that were lost in the twilight sky for doubles, as Nunez plated Stokes Jr to bring York within 13-6.
York righty Will Carter worked out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth by inducing a flyout to left by Brantley Bell, and infielder Alejandro Rivero pitched the ninth inning scoreless on nine pitches, eight of which were strikes, fanning Travis for his first career strikeout in his second career pitching appearance.
The Revs mounted another comeback bid, this time against Ducks closer Kevin Quackenbush who gave up a one-out double to Rhinesmith before Stokes Jr. singled him home. Drew Mendoza doubled to left center driving in Stokes Jr., and Alexis Pantoja singled to right center to drive in Mendoza, bringing York within 13-9. Giambrone hammered a two-run homer to deep left center cutting the deficit to 13-11, but the rally ended as Otosaka bounced out to second for the final out.
