(June 29, 2017 – Bridgeport, Ct.): Logan Williamson turned in seven brilliant innings, but the Bridgeport Bluefish scored twice in the eighth, handing the York Revolution a 3-1 defeat on Thursday evening at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. After dropping three of four in the series, the Revs return home to host the Sugar Land Skeeters this weekend to close the season’s first half.
Williamson’s seven innings were a season-high, as the lefty allowed just one run on six hits while walking two and striking out two.
The Bluefish managed only a first inning run against Williamson, scoring as Jose Cuevas doubled with two outs and came home on a Daniel Fields single for the game’s first run.
Williamson allowed two more two-out hits in the second, but then settled in, beginning a stretch of 13 consecutive batters retired, and four consecutive 1-2-3 innings, needing no more than 10 pitches to get through any inning from the third through the sixth.
The Revs tied it up in the fifth as Carlos Triunfel led off with a single to right, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a ground out by Ryan Dent, and scored when Alonzo Harris legged out a two-out infield hit.
Bluefish starter Charles Brewer allowed only that run over his 6.2 innings, holding the Revs to four hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Williamson kept the game tied, leaving the bases loaded in the seventh. After a leadoff single to Jonathan Galvez, Williamson secured the first out on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Lambo, completing a spectacular diving flip to first base to record the out. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases, but Williamson buckled down, striking out Angel Rosa and retiring D’Arby Myers on a fielder’s choice to maintain the 1-1 deadlock.
The Bluefish plated two runs on reliever Drue Bravo (0-1) in the bottom of the eighth, singling four times off the right-hander in his Atlantic League debut. Fields broke the tie with a sacrifice fly to left and Angelys Nina ripped an RBI single to left for the insurance.
David Carpenter claimed his league-leading 23rd save with a scoreless ninth. Dayron Varona led off with an infield single, but Carpenter retired the next three, including a deep fly out to left by Jared Mitchell for the second out, and a line out to deep left field off the bat of Carlos Triunfel for the third out, as Fields left his feet to make the reaching grab on the warning track.
York righty Victor Mateo (2-5, 3.75) faces Sugar Land right-hander Brett Marshall (5-3, 4.83) in Friday’s opener at PeoplesBank Park at 6:30 p.m. It is Boy Scout Sleepover Night #1 and Harry Potter Night.
