(August 29, 2018) – The York Revolution saw their season-high-tying four-game winning streak snapped with a 10-3 loss to the New Britain Bees on Wednesday night at New Britain Stadium.
York struck early as Alonzo Harris dropped down a bunt single to lead off the game. After a steal of second, Harris advanced to third before scoring on a passed ball for the game's first run. The Revs were unable to make it a big inning despite three consecutive walks from New Britain starter Brandon Beachy, who left the bases loaded.
The Revs made it 2-0 in the second as Harris doubled to left-center with two outs and scored on a Jared Mitchell single to center coming on a 3-0 pitch.
The Bees tied the game in the bottom of the second. Jovan Rosa drove an opposite field home run to right to start the inning. James Skelton kept the inning alive with a two-out double to right-center and scored on a single to left by Vicente Conde, tying the game at 2-2.
The Revs went back in front with a run in the fifth. Telvin Nash and Isaias Tejeda started the inning with base hits, and both advanced on a Welington Dotel ground out. That set up a sac fly to center off the bat of Travis Witherspoon, giving York a 3-2 lead.
Revs starter Mitch Atkins had settled in, working scoreless innings in the third, fourth, and fifth. The right-hander had retired seven straight before a one-out single by Rosa in the sixth. Atkins notched the second out on a strike out of Jamar Walton for his 117th strike out of the season, taking over the Atlantic League lead.
One out away from sending the game to the seventh with the lead, the Revs were smacked with four runs from the Bees in the bottom of the sixth. Jonathan Galvez launched a two-run homer to left-center to give New Britain a sudden 4-3 lead, and Conde added a two-run long ball of his own on a shot to left, making it 6-3.
The Revs threatened in the eighth, loading the bases on three consecutive one-out singles from Ryan Dent, Henry Castillo, and Harris (4-for-5), but lefty reliever Jim Fuller retired Mitchell on a 3-2-3 double play to escape with no damage done.
New Britain put the game away with four more runs in the eighth. Walton led off with a home run to right-center, the Bees' fourth of the night. Darren Ford provided an RBI single to right-center, and Jason Rogers capped the scoring with a two-out, two-run single to left-center.
The Revs pounded 12 hits but stranded 11 runners, and were out-hit by the Bees who totaled 14 knocks.
Atkins (11-6), the league-leader in wins, suffered just his third loss in his last 14 decisions and 15 starts.
Notes: The four-game winning streak was the Revs' third of the year; York also won four straight, May 6-11 and June 28-30. Atkins looks to become just the second pitcher in Revs history to lead the league in strike outs; Chris Cody led the Atlantic League with 139 strike outs in 2013. Harris' four-hit night included a pair of bunt singles; he now has a seven-game hitting streak and has scored in six straight. Mitchell has now hit safely in nine straight and Melky Mesa (1-for-4) has hit safely in seven straight. York lefty Robert Carson (8-6, 3.71) faces New Britain right-hander Kyle Simon (8-6, 4.11) on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, The New WOYK app, and WOYK 1350 on YouTube beginning at 6:15 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
